Thomas Weller, 65

Thomas Weller, Stevens Point, died June 3, 2023, at home under hospice care. Tom was 65 years old.

He was born May 26, 1958, in Santa Barbara, Cali., to Willett Patrick Weller and Leone (née Hein) Weller. As a child, he lived with his family in San Diego, California, North Stonington, Connecticut, Farmington, Michigan, and Stevens Point. He was a proud member of the SPASH Class of 1976 and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He studied abroad for a semester in Malaysia and spent a semester at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

He met his wife Mary in 1983 after coming home from a winter season working at Keystone Ski Resort in Colorado. They were married in 1989 in Ephraim, Wisconsin.

Tom’s career as a senior field claims specialist spanned over 30 years, working for Sentry/Dairyland, General Casualty and Pekin Insurance. He worked almost his entire career from his home office, often saying that he was a pioneer in working remotely from home in his pajamas.

Tom and Mary were blessed with their daughter, Kara, who will be getting married to Pierce Weiss in January 2024 and graduating from Nashville’s Belmont University Law School in May 2024.

He was predeceased by his parents and is survived by his wife, Mary and daughter, Kara, brothers, Patrick and Mark (Kathy) and sisters, Karen (Thain) Jones, and Anne Cuomo and many friends and relatives. He was kind, smart, funny and creative. He was a teddy bear artist, designing and making more than 50 vintage teddy bears out of mohair and elixir. He loved sport motorcycles and attending car and motorcycle races at Road America.

He was an active member of Stevens Point Elks Lodge #641, serving in various leadership positions, including exalted ruler, district deputy and district vice president. He was a mentor to his sister, Anne Cuomo, who became the first woman to serve as Stevens Point Elks Exalted Ruler.

Tom had a soft spot in his heart for dachshunds because of their inquisitiveness and fun-loving nature. He also enjoyed spending time at his family cottage on Pine Lake in Shawano County and traveling with Mary throughout the U. S., Mexico, Canada, and Europe.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, and especially the nurses, at Aspirus in Stevens Point, Meriter Hospital and UW Health in Madison.
