Proposed UWSP health, wellness center gets first green light from state

By Patrick Lynn

A new $32.9-million student health and wellness project at UW-Stevens Point has been approved as part of the state Joint Finance Committee’s 2023-25 capital budget.

First approved at UW-Stevens Point by student referendum in 2014 and reaffirmed in 2022, the project will be funded with student-segregated fees through cash and program revenue bonding.

The Student Health and Wellness Center will be constructed as an addition to Marshfield Clinic Health System Champions Hall at the intersection of Fourth Ave. and Isadore St.

The facility will include space for student health services and counseling center, and provide additional fitness and recreation space, using a “holistic design to encourage student interaction and healthy lifestyles.”

“This comprehensive facility will benefit our students by providing their health and wellness services in one location, as well as offering more patient privacy and additional space to meet the increasing needs of our students. It will allow our health promotion and wellness students to have a central location for their required labs and physicals,” said Chancellor Thomas Gibson.

The Joint Finance Committee approval is just the first step. The project still needs to be approved by the State Senate and the Assembly before being sent to the governor for final approval.
