Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra to present ‘Russian Masters’

By Patrick Lynn

The Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra (CWSO) is set to conclude its 75th Season with “Russian Masters,” a captivating concert taking place on April 13 and 14 at the Sentry Theater.

The Saturday performance will begin at 7:30 pm, followed by Sunday’s at 4 p.m. The event will showcase a world premiere piece titled “Melting Pot/Melting Point Overture,” composed by CWSO musician Keith Dom Powell. Additionally, the concert will feature Shostakovich’s “Cello Concerto No. 1,” performed by renowned cellist Christine Lamprea, as well as Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 4” and a mystery piece chosen by audience vote, revealed to be the “Finale from William Tell Overture” by Rossini.

Christine Lamprea, a cellist and recipient of the Sphinx Medal of Excellence, is celebrated for her emotionally charged and intense performances. Lamprea made her solo debut at Carnegie Hall in 2013 and has since graced prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center. She has collaborated with numerous orchestras worldwide, including the Detroit Symphony and the Houston Symphony.

Lamprea, who currently teaches at the Longy School of Music of Bard College and the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University, received her master’s degree from the New England Conservatory.

Keith Dom Powell, the principal horn player, holds a B.A. in horn performance from Stony Brook University and an M.Mus. in music composition from Carnegie Mellon University. Powell, who has also studied in Germany, is known for his compositions and arrangements, which have been performed by various orchestras and chamber groups.

The “Melting Pot/Melting Point Overture” was commissioned by the CWSO to celebrate its 75th anniversary, paying homage to the diverse cultures of Stevens Point. Powell’s composition includes subtle references to Spanish, French, Austrian, and Polish music, including a brief Polka, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of the region.

The piece juxtaposes moments of high energy with introspective and mysterious passages, symbolizing both the festive and contemplative aspects of the community’s identity.

Tickets for the concert are priced at $35 for adults, $30 for seniors, and $12 for students or children. UWSP students can purchase $5 walk-up tickets. Tickets are available online at cwso.org, at the CWSO office inside the Smith Scarabocchio Art Museum, by phone at 715-345-7726, or at the door prior to each performance.
