Mid-State’s Nursing program remains in top nursing school ranking

By Patrick Lynn

Mid-State Technical College’s Nursing program has once again earned recognition as one of the top ten nursing schools in Wisconsin, securing the fourth spot on RegisteredNursing.org’s 2024 Best RN Programs in Wisconsin list.

The program’s accolade follows the announcement by the Wisconsin Board of Nursing of Mid-State’s exceptional National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) pass rate of 100 percent for 2023. The achievement stands out significantly when compared to the national first-time pass rate of 87.8 percent.

The NCLEX pass rates play a crucial role in evaluating a program’s effectiveness in supporting students toward licensure and their future careers. Thirty-six colleges in Wisconsin offering programs leading to an associate in nursing (ADN/ASN), a bachelor’s in nursing (BSN), or a direct entry MSN were part of this evaluation process.

Deb Johnson-Schuh, the dean of Mid-State’s School of Nursing, expressed delight at the program’s sustained fourth-place ranking, attributing its success to the commitment and expertise of the Nursing faculty. She emphasized the faculty’s dedication to student success both in and out of the classroom, as well as in healthcare settings, setting Mid-State’s program apart from others.

Johnson-Schuh also commended the hard work of the Nursing students, noting their drive and determination throughout the program. She acknowledged the difficulty of passing the NCLEX exam on the first attempt and praised the students for consistently meeting this challenge.

Mid-State’s Nursing program offers several advantages for students, including affordable tuition with financial aid options, integration of technology, hands-on clinical training, and job placement support. Students also benefit from additional skills practice at Mid-State’s Healthcare Simulation Center at Aspirus Riverview Hospital, which uses advanced simulators to replicate various clinical scenarios, enhancing students’ confidence and learning experience.

The NCLEX is a nationwide exam for nursing licensure in the United States, administered since 1982. Graduates of nursing schools must pass the NCLEX to obtain their nursing license, and pass rates reflect the percentage of graduates who successfully pass the exam. The analysis for the ranking considered both past and present first-time NCLEX-RN pass rates, weighted by year.
