City plans Arbor Day tree planting

STEVENS POINT — The Stevens Point Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department, in conjunction with the Urban Forestry Class of Mid-State Technical College, is set to host a tree planting event on Monday, May 6.

The event will be held at a city-owned vacant lot located on Henrietta St., between Williams St. and Whiting Ave., at 10 a.m. The community is welcome to attend.

With Stevens Point recently honored as a Tree City USA for the 43rd consecutive year, and having received the National Arbor Day’s Growth Award for the 19th time, the city is enthusiastic about its green initiatives.

Participants in the tree planting ceremony will include members of the Stevens Point Forestry Department, Mayor Mike Wiza, and students from MSTC’s Urban Forestry program. The agenda for the event includes the planting of six apple trees, three pear trees, two peach trees, one mulberry tree, one pecan tree, and five hazelnut bushes.

Mayor Wiza is expected to issue the Arbor Day proclamation during the ceremony, marking the importance of the event.

This marks the city’s second fruit tree planting initiative, following a previous planting on North Central Conservancy Trust land adjacent to Bukolt Park, aimed at supporting community members facing food insecurity issues.

The purchase of plants for this event is made possible by funding from Wisconsin Public Service.
