Eight ducklings were returned safely to their mother after falling into a storm drain early Wednesday morning.

Stevens Point Police Officer Josh Hilgart responded to the 900 block of Clark St., near Diversi-Tea, at about 6:40 a.m. on May 30 after a caller reported several ducklings fell down the drain near the intersection of Clark and Second streets.

Hilgart responded with a fishing net he retrieved from police station headquarters on Michigan Ave., using it to scoop the ducks from the confined space. Within six minutes, all the ducklings had been rescued.

When he replaced the storm grate, passersby noticed two of the ducklings had become disoriented and hopped down a nearby staircase. Hilgart helped the birds back up to street level.

“As long as they’re safe and not committing a crime, where they go from here is none of my concern,” Hilgart quipped following the rescue.

Hilgart has been with the Stevens Point Police Dept. since February 2017 and was previously a law enforcement officer in North Dakota.
