Portage Co. seeks citizen for Park Commission appointment

By Brandi Makuski

The Portage County Executive’s Office is currently accepting applications for a citizen appointment to the Portage County Park Commission.

The appointment is to fill the remainder of an existing term, set to expire on June 30, 2029.

Any Portage County resident interested in serving on the Park Commission can apply online here, contact County Executive John Pavelski’s office by phone at 715-346-1997, or email [email protected] for more information.

The Park Commission, governed by Wisconsin Statutes 27.02 – 27.06, consists of seven members: four members from the County Board of Supervisors and three citizen members. All members are appointed by the County Executive.

Citizen members serve a term of seven years, expiring on the last day of June in the designated year, not to exceed two consecutive terms. County Supervisor’s terms end when their membership on the County Board terminates, unless reappointed to the Commission.

The Commission’s responsibilities include setting policy and providing policy guidance and legislative oversight for the activities of the county parks department and the park system. They also deal with matters pertaining to the restoration of forests and the encouragement of programs to assist in the restoration of wildlife, game, and fish within Portage County.

County Supervisors and citizen members are entitled to per diems and mileage. The chairperson of the Commission is an elected member of the County Board of Supervisors.
