Police: Woman assaulted near Church & Matlilda

By Brandi Makuski

Stevens Point police say a woman was assaulted on the city’s south side on July 1.

Providers at a local hospital contacted police shortly after 3 a.m. on Sunday after a 28-year-old woman came in for treatment consistent with being physically assaulted. The woman told police she’d been assaulted near Church and Matilda streets.

The woman was reportedly walking home alone from the downtown area. The extent of her injuries was not immediately released.

The alleged attacker is described as a five-foot-five Hispanic male with a thin build, short hair, and wearing a dark shirt.

Assistant Police Chief Tom Zenner said police continue to investigate the incident, but anyone with information should contact the police dept. at (715) 346-1400.

Zenner said the incident is being falsely linked to another reported assault on June 28. That incident involved a 37-year-old woman who reported being assaulted near Church and Monroe streets, but police do not believe that incident occurred as the victim described.

“Our investigators did a very thorough investigation, we studied the various video cameras from the businesses in the area, and found nothing to corroborate her story,” Zenner said.

Zenner said social media is making their jobs a little tougher, as some community Facebook pages have already linked the two events.

“We found the June 28 incident to be a false report,” Zenner said, adding the woman involved in that incident was “not being charged at this time” but declined to elaborate.

More as we have it.
