John W. Kovatch, 77

John W. Kovatch, age 77, of Plover passed away at home on June 28, 2018.

John was born on November 23, 1940, to the late Walter and Edna (Nabke) Kovatch in Milwaukee. At a young age, his family moved to Abbotsford, Wis., where he grew up on the family farm, attended the community grade school, and graduated from Abbotsford High School.

John relocated to Stevens Point to attend the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. He graduated with degrees in History and English.

He married Barbara A. Johnson on July 27, 1960, in Minocqua, Wis. They have enjoyed 58 years of marriage.

In his earlier years, John worked as a manager for J.C. Penny Department Store in Sheboygan, Wis., before becoming employed with the General Adjustment Bureau in the claims department. John later became an underwriter with Sentry Insurance in Milwaukee. He was transferred to Sentry’s location in Stevens Point.

John retired from Sentry in 1997 as the Director of Underwriting National Accounts.

John will be remembered for his love of family, his dedication to his wife, and his quick wit. He was considered the “Master of Banter” and was able to utilize his large vocabulary when appropriate. John relished entertaining the family and hosting events and get-togethers. In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing, traveling, reading, musicals, and watching the classics. He loved sports and passionately cheered on the Green Bay Packers, the Badgers, and Brewers. He was a 36-year member of the Elks.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; children, Scott (Patti) Kovatch, Beth Kovatch, Jeff (Sandra) Kovatch, and Mark (Kelly) Kovatch; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Kathleen.

A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 3 at Trinity Lutheran Church.

A time of visitation and sharing of memories will be held on Monday, beginning at 4 p.m. and concluding at 7 p.m. with an Elks ritual at Boston Funeral Home.

Visitation will also be held at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Committal rites and burial will be held in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
