Nearly half a ton of drugs…

Metro Wire Staff

Plover Police Chief Dan Ault, with Sheriff Mike Lukas and Assistant Chief Tom Zenner from the Stevens Point Police Dept., pose for a photo in front of 850 pounds of prescription drugs on April 30.

The discarded prescription drugs were turned in at local law enforcement offices throughout the year, and during special Drug Take Back events at the end of April.

According to Sheriff Mike Lukas, the three departments filled 35 boxes with leftover prescriptions, which were transported out of the area on Monday morning for destruction at an out-of-state incinerator.

The collection amount is down from last year, when law enforcement collected more than 1,400 pounds of prescription drugs.

Lukas said the collections are meant to stave prescription drug abuse, which often leads to illegal drug use.
