Letter: Meleesa Johnson is ‘an inspiration,’ deserves re-election

To the Editor-

Meleesa Johnson is a proven leader and an inspiration to me.

At the age of 40, she was hit by a serious illness that left her unable to work and provide for her children. While others would give up in desperation, Meleesa found a way to overcome this. She got help from programs to help disabled individuals and received grants and loans to start her college career. She was able to provide for her children and, four years later, she was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Policy and Planning.

Upon graduation, Meleesa created Portage County’s hazardous waste and electronics collection programs. She currently serves as the Director of the Marathon County Solid Waste Department and is President of Associated Recyclers of Wisconsin, where she collaborates with State legislators.

On top of her day job, she has served five years as District 5 Alderperson on the Stevens Point City Council and on the Portage County Board. She chairs the city’s Finance Committee and newly-created Diversity Affairs and Inclusion Committee as well as the county’s Health Care Center Committee. Meleesa has also been voted as the President of the City Council for two terms. Her leadership and her ability to reach across the aisle are recognized by her peers.

Three causes that capture my heart have been supported by Meleesa. One is the creation of Emerson Park. Meleesa created the Friends of Emerson Park to provide funds for this worthy cause. I used to live on Ellis Street right across from this site. What a SUPER project!

Another one is the Portage County Health Care Center. She cares deeply for the elderly and disabled people who need to be served by the Center. Her leadership is appreciated in keeping this place solvent.

The third one is helping Stevens Point to be a safe place to travel by car, bike, or by foot. I walk or ride my bike every day and I appreciate her transportation initiatives.

Meleesa has been a visionary voice on the Council, an advocate for the marginalized, and is a champion of inclusiveness. Her goal is to promote quality of life for all individuals. I highly recommend her as District 5 Alderperson.
