Evers updates mass gatherings order, media deemed ‘essential business’

Gov. Tony Evers has expanded his ban on mass gatherings of 10 or more people to include the closure of hair salons, day spas, nail salons, barbershops, tattoo parlors, body art establishments, and tanning facilities.

All of the personal care businesses were ordered to close their doors on Friday afternoon as a measure to slow the spread of COVID-19.

A previous order to close schools through April 6 has been changed to “indefinite” closure.

Under Evers’ expanded order, laundromats can remain open, and bars and restaurants can remain open for carryout sales. Other services deemed essential and exempt under Evers’ current closure list include government functions, police, fire, and EMT services, financial institutions, public transportation services, hotels, and the media.

“All gatherings that bring together or are likely to bring together 10 or less [sic] people in a single room or confined space, whether inside or outside, at the same time must preserve social distancing and follow all other public health recommendations issued by DHS or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” Evers’ press statement reads in part. “Voluntary cancellation, closure, or limitations on the size of gatherings beyond the requirements of this order are permitted and encouraged.”

Residents are asked to avoid all social gatherings, including sleepovers and playdates, parties, and large family gatherings. Evers on Saturday also released a statement urging residents to stay home.
