County, DNR partner to offer deer carcass bin, CWD testing

Metro Wire Staff

The Portage Co. Solid Waste Transfer Facility is now accepting deer carcasses and remains.

The facility is only allowed to accept deer remains during certain times of the year. For the 2023 deer season, the facility has partnered with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in providing a dumpster at the transfer facility.

The service is only open to Portage Co. residents. Processing facilities and businesses will need to make arrangements to have carcasses sent directly to the landfill in either Adams or Marathon Co.

The service ends on Jan. 31, 2024.

The transfer facility will also serve as a testing site for Chronic Wasting Disease. Deer heads can be dropped off for testing in a self-service kiosk located next to the carcass disposal dumpster.

Due to CWD concerns, many Wisconsin landfills no longer accept deer carcasses. Anyone needing to dispose of deer carcasses or remains outside of the posted time frame listed above can have them disposed of at the Marathon County landfill for a fee.

It is illegal to dispose of waste on any public lands or roadways, or on private property without permission, according to the DNR. For more information go to dnr.wi.gov/topic/wildlifehabitat/carcass.html.

The Portage County Waste Transfer Facility is located at 600 Moore Rd. in Plover.
