Two men have been charged for their roles in the overdose death of a pregnant woman.

Charges have been requested against Laron C. Thomas, 35, and 27-year-old Isaiah N. Solis, both of Wisconsin Rapids, for two counts of first-degree reckless homicide in the death of a 27-year-old woman and her unborn child. Both men are currently in custody on unrelated charges and were informed on Wednesday of the new charges they were facing.

According to Stevens Point Police Chief Bob Kussow, police were called to an apartment on the 2600 block of Indiana Ave. on June 1 at 5:54 p.m., when a caller reported a woman in the home was unresponsive and not breathing.

The woman was eight months pregnant when she was pronounced dead, according to Kussow.

Officers observed evidence of narcotics in the home, kicking off a lengthy investigation involving investigators from the Central Wisconsin Drug Task Force. Upon identifying Solis and Thomas as suspects who may have provided the fatal drugs to the woman, detectives obtained a search warrant for a home on the 1340 block of 16th St. in Wisconsin Rapids.

When the warrant was served on July 7, officers seized 55.74 grams of fentanyl, 29.40 grams of crack cocaine, 8.93 grams of methamphetamine, and 5.27 grams of marijuana laced with methamphetamine, five hits of LSD, and two firearms with ammunition.

According to the toxicology report conducted on the victim’s body, detective learned on July 12 that the woman had a fentanyl blood concentration of 59 ng/ml. Fentanyl is a prescribed opioid that is reported to be 80-to-200 times as potent as morphine. In fatalities from Fentanyl, blood concentrations are variable and have been reported as low as 3 ng/ml, Kussow said.

Thomas is currently being held in the Wood Co. jail on charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and felony bail-jumping.  Solis, who previously lived in Stevens Point, was in custody on a probation hold.
