Taxes due Jan. 31, county treasurer reminds property owners

Metro Wire Staff

The Portage Co. Treasurer is reminding county residents that property tax payments are due Jan. 31, 2024.

All payments made on or before the Jan. 31 due date should be paid to the payee listed on the “first installment” tab at the bottom of the recipient’s tax bill.

The towns of Almond, Belmont, Eau Pleine, and Lanark do not contract with the county for the first installment of property tax collection, according to Portage Co. Treasurer Pam Przybelski, so her office has no ability to accept those payments.

Payments must be received by the treasurer’s office no later than five business days after Jan. 31, or postmarked on or before Jan. 31, to be considered timely, she said.

Przybelski also said the county does not automatically mail receipts. County residents who want a receipt need to either enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope for a mailed receipt or print one out from the treasurer’s website at https://www.co.portage.wi.gov/431/Treasurers-Office.

Payments can also be made online using a debit card, credit card, or electronic check, or by calling 1-877-782-4828, for a fee.

Payments can also be made in person at the treasurer’s office, located in the Portage Co. Courthouse at 1516 Church St. in Stevens Point. The office is open Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
