SPYBA traveling team tryouts Aug. 19 & 26

Metro Wire Staff

Stevens Point Youth Baseball Association is holding travel baseball team tryouts for its 2019 season during the next two weekends, a change from previous years when tryouts were held in the spring.

Tryouts for SPYBA Travel Baseball 8U through 13U will be held at Zenoff Park on Aug. 19 and 26.

The travel teams offer an opportunity for participants to play competitive baseball in a tournament setting at different baseball venues across the state. Teams will play in 4-6 tournaments during the summer.

Tournaments are chosen and scheduled based on the “best-fit” for each team’s ability and skill level, according to a news release from SPYBA Vice President David Cooper.

Tryouts for the 14- and 15-year-old players will take place in the spring of 2019, time and date to be determined. In order to be eligible for traveling teams, players must also be registered and play in the regular 2019 SPYBA league.

Players’ birthdays must fall into respective age categories by April 30, 2019.

Tryout times are the same for Aug. 19 and Aug. 26: 8U, 2-2:45 p.m.; 9U,  3-3:45 p.m.; 10U, 3-3:45
11U, 12U, and 13U, 4-4:45 p.m.

Players should bring a hat, helmet, glove, and baseball pants, and arrive 15 minutes early.

A deposit of $100 will be collected at the time of tryouts and applied to participant fees in the spring. The participant fees cover jerseys, hats and tournament entry fees.

SPYBA altered its traditional tryout schedule to an earlier date because the organization has to sign up for next summer’s tournaments in January. It also, according to Cooper, allows SPYBA to schedule some spring tournaments for the teams, something it hasn’t done before.
