About The Havenwoods State Forest Habitat Rehabilitation Project

Havenwoods State Forest, Wisconsin’s only urban State Forest, is located on the north side of the City of Milwaukee along Lincoln Creek and is within the Milwaukee Estuary Area of Concern boundaries. Through prairie and wetland restoration, management and expansion of forests, and control of problematic invasive plant species, the goal is to return this 237-acre site to a mix of open and forested landscapes that will better support native wildlife populations.

The planning phase of the project concluded in 2021 with the creation of an Ecological Restoration and Management Plan. The project is now in the design stage where key habitats on the property will be reimagined to benefit specific wildlife species. The RFP includes creation of a Habitat Restoration Plan for the property and construction bid preparation. The RFP also includes construction oversight and post-construction monitoring; however, these tasks will be contingent on the availability of funding.

Havenwoods is one of several projects identified to help bring back rare and threatened wildlife populations in the Milwaukee Estuary Area of Concern. Community members also have an important role in shaping the future of this popular urban oasis. The project aims to offer more ways for people to connect with nature, enjoy outdoor recreation and participate in activities. Learn more about the Havenwoods State Forest habitat project here.
