One displaced after apartment fire

Firefighters say no one was injured during a structure fire on the 2600 block of Indiana Ave. on Saturday.

Metro Fire crew responded to a structure fire at River Cove Apartments, 2601 Indiana Ave., at 3:31 a.m. on Aug. 11. Upon arrival, the Stevens Point Fire Department found smoke coming from the roof on the north corner of an apartment building.

The fire was contained to one apartment, according to Capt. Ron Heibler, with no smoke or water damage to any other apartments. The building was evacuated prior to our arrival, and firefighters rescued a gecko and guinea pig from the home.

Plover Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Heibler said about $30,000 in damage was sustained to the building, and $15,000 in contents were lost. The American Red Cross was on the scene to assist the tenant.

SPFD cleared the scene at about 6:15 a.m. on Saturday. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
