By Patrick Lynn

Dr. Shelly Mondeik, President of Mid-State Technical College, has been honored by the professional networking organization Women We Admire, earning a place among the Top Women Leaders of Wisconsin for 2023.

Dr. Mondeik assumed the presidency at Mid-State Technical College on June 1, 2017, becoming the institution’s sixth president. With over two decades of experience in the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS), her tenure includes diverse roles such as full-time faculty, academic dean, and vice president of academics.

Mondeik’s leadership spans national, state, and regional levels within higher education, earning her recognition as a dedicated leader committed to meeting the needs of students, industries, and local communities.

Emphasizing the value of partnerships, student success, and community relationships, Mondeik spearheaded various initiatives. Notably, she secured over $23 million for the construction of the Advanced Manufacturing, Engineering Technology, and Apprenticeship (AMETATM) Center. Her efforts also led to collaborations for a new health care simulation center and multiple agreements with public safety entities to provide essential local training.

Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, under her leadership in 2022-23, Mid-State Technical College experienced a 20+ percent increase in headcount, securing the top spot in headcount and full-time enrollment (FTE) growth within the WTCS.

Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Mondeik attributed her success to collaborative efforts within Mid-State and partnerships with local industries. She acknowledged the support of Mid-State’s Board of Directors in pursuing innovative ideas and partnerships that benefit the college and the communities it serves.

Mondeik holds a doctorate in educational leadership from Edgewood College, complemented by master’s and bachelor’s degrees in career and technical education from the UW–Stout. She also earned an associate degree at Northcentral Technical College.

She’s involved in various boards and she currently serves on the Aspirus Riverview Hospital, United Way of South Wood and Adams Counties, Wisconsin Rapids Noon Rotary, and Wisconsin Women in Higher Education Leadership (WWHEL) Boards of Directors.
