Plover schedules annual Korean War Memorial ceremony

By Patrick Lynn

Plover — The 2024 Wisconsin Korean War Veterans Memorial Ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 2.

The event will be held at the Wisconsin Korean War Veterans Memorial Island within Lake Pacawa Park in Plover. Pre-ceremony music will begin at 10:45 a.m., with the ceremony starting promptly at 11.

The Memorial, which pays tribute to Wisconsinites who fought, died, or are still missing as a result of the Korean War, features a series of larger-than-life bronze statues representing various U.S. Armed Forces that took part in the war. Notably, none of the figures carry a weapon, symbolizing the hope for peace cherished by all veterans.

Korean War Veterans and their families, along with veterans from all branches of service and members of the public, are invited to attend. Guest speakers will include State Senator Patrick Testin, State Representative Katrina Shankland, Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary-Designee James Bond, and Village Administration.

As the event will be held outdoors, attendees are advised to dress appropriately for the conditions and bring blankets, umbrellas, jackets, fans, water, etc., to ensure comfort throughout the ceremony. Seating will be provided, but attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs if they prefer.

Due to the reconstruction of County Hwy. B, access to Lake Pacawa Park will be limited during the ceremony, and alternate routes will need to be taken. Attendees are encouraged to allow extra travel time to account for potential traffic delays. Bathroom facilities will be available for use through the Sentry Curling Center on the day of the event.
