Metro Wire removes paywall during COVID-19 crisis

Metro Wire Staff

The Point/Plover Metro Wire staff has been working tirelessly over the past several days to bring you the latest local news related to the COVID-19 emergency, and we’re offering that news for free.

On our pages, you’ve been able to find running lists of canceled or postponed events, a list of businesses now offering pickup or delivery service, and changes to local schedules and services from municipal governments.

To help give K-12 students a little something to do, we’ve kicked off a contest to help name the local crisis, and throughout the next few weeks, we’ll be offering some free online activities, including local crossword puzzles, and some easy recipes from local police and fire departments, to help stave off the boredom.

The crisis has left many families stuck at home, and for some, temporarily out of a job. To help, the Metro Wire staff is also compiling another running list, one that contains resources for families, students, and small business owners who need help. That list of resources will be published sometime on Wednesday.

We’re doing this for free because we believe the news industry is a public service. But we still have our own costs to cover: staff time, website costs, and travel around the community.

The Metro Wire has removed its paywall from stories containing information for those in most need during the COVID-19 emergency. We’ll publish coronavirus-related closures and postponements, and new information from the state and county health departments, as they happen.

We know that not all newsrooms are offering news for free, but as we move through the crisis as a community, please consider subscribing to the Metro Wire. Our staff only covers communities inside Portage Co. via our 24-hour newsroom, and regularly brings you exclusive news and interviews and breaking news.

More importantly, we are the locally-owned and operated daily news source in the county.

If you have any questions or concerns, or information on a COVID-19 related closure or cancelation, please send it to [email protected].
