‘Mechanics for Mutts’ rakes in big dough

By Patrick Lynn

It all started six years ago, around the family backyard fire pit.

Dave Harvath and his wife Anna, owners of D&D Automotive Services, Inc. in Stevens Point, were discussing how they could help the less fortunate animals in Portage County. The Harvath household includes two daughters, plus other members of their family—three dogs, three cats, and two birds.

Anna Harvath derived the event theme, and the “Mechanics For Mutts” fundraiser was born.

Dave Harvath said his wife has a “soft spot” for animals, and the program was one way the business could give something back to the community that has supported him for nearly 30 years.

The sixth annual “Mechanics for Mutts” campaign began in October, with proceeds from oil changes, repairs, or a percentage of each day’s sales through the beginning of November going towards the cause.

This year’s donation comes to $8,740.

Sherri Galle-Teske, executive director of the Portage Co. Humane Society, said the Harvath’s business has brought in over $30,000 through the years.

“With the rising costs of healthcare and supplies, the shelter is over-the-top thrilled to accept this donation,” Galle-Teske said. “With a big bow-wow and a meow—thank you to the entire Harvath family and the team at D & D Automotive.”
