Letter: Only one candidate is ready to be judge now

To the Editor-

Everyone can agree a good judge requires an appropriate demeanor, temperament, and personality. Let’s not forget that it also requires the ability to extend those attitudes to all parties in the courtroom. The defendants and respondents must have the same consideration under the law as that of victims and plaintiffs.

Stephen Sawyer has that ability, gained from his experience: civil law, criminal prosecution, pro bono work, and a legal practice focusing on criminal defense in felonies, misdemeanors, and juvenile cases across the state.

He is well aware of the issues that a judge presides over and how all individuals appearing in court should be treated. Representing clients in many different courts, in 30 different counties, his courtroom experience is impressive as is his knowledge of the role of judge in the court system. The law is a process and to have such a broad understanding of that process, as Steve does, is phenomenal.

Unlike his opponent, Steve is ready to be judge now. As judge, it’s all on you. If you don’t do it, it doesn’t get done. As a sole practitioner, Steve Sawyer does that every day. He is also a U.S. Navy veteran with eight years of active-duty experience and the skill set that comes with service.

Stephen Sawyer will commit to serving all people of the county. As in his campaign, he’ll be impartial and unbiased. Portage County has a history of good judges, please choose Sawyer as our next one on April 5, 2022.
