Inland trout early catch and release season opens Jan. 6

Metro Wire Staff

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding anglers that the early catch and release season for inland trout commences on Jan. 6, 2024.

During this period, anglers are permitted to pursue any of Wisconsin’s four inland trout species on specified inland waters, using artificial tackle exclusively, from Jan. 6 through May 3, 2024. Any trout caught must be promptly released. Additional details can be found in the Guide to Wisconsin’s Trout Fishing Regulations.

Following the commencement of the general hook and line season on May 4, 2024, anglers may retain the trout they catch, ensuring compliance with length requirements and bag limits.

To participate, individuals must possess a valid 2023-24 fishing license and an inland trout stamp, valid until March 31, 2024, obtainable through Go Wild, the DNR’s license portal, or an authorized license agent. Starting April 1, 2024, anglers will require a 2024-2025 fishing license and inland trout stamp.

All anglers are strongly encouraged to sustain responsible catch and release practices, minimizing fish handling time and utilizing proper release methods. Guidance on responsible catch and release techniques is available on the DNR’s responsible catch and release webpage.

Further information on trout fishing can be found on the DNR’s trout fishing webpage.
