Day Of Giving unites campus, community, to help students

Metro Wire Staff

UW-Stevens Point has planned an annual day of “fun and philanthropy” to support student scholarships and programs.

The Day of Giving (D.O.G.), scheduled this year on Tuesday, May 7, offers the community a variety of creative fundraising activities for students, faculty and staff members, and alumni and friends of UWSP.

According to a news release from UWSP, the 24-hour period is earmarked for the community to “express their Pointer pride through selfies, social media posts, service, donations and matching challenges” designed to support particular academic programs or other areas.

A few ways to participate:

-Wear Pointer gear. UW-Stevens Point Chancellor Bernie Patterson will donate $1 for every selfie taken in Pointer gear ($2 for a D.O.G. shirt) and posted on social media. Use the hashtag #UWSPGivesBack or tag the UWSP Foundation on your platform of choice.

-Show up and be counted. Come to the Dreyfus University Center at UW-Stevens Point at noon and have your photo taken as part of a giant campus “selfie.” Vice Chancellor Al Thompson will donate $1 for every person in the photo. Pizza and cake will be served after the photo is taken.

-Share why you care. Post on social media describing how the university makes a positive impact on the community and the ways in which you or your business support UW-Stevens Point students.

-Join a Day of Service event. Organized by the UW-Stevens Point alumni chapters, Days of Service are community volunteer opportunities that take place in various cities across the country. Join Wausau area alumni to fill “Blessings in a Backpack” beginning at 4 p.m. May 7. -Give to The Cupboard. Donate canned goods or make a monetary gift to The Cupboard, a food pantry that serves UW-Stevens Point students who need emergency or supplementary assistance.

-Leverage your gift. Multiply the impact of your gift on May 7 through a matching gift challenge, sponsored by Athletics and several academic colleges. Additional funds are contributed by donors when certain pre-determined challenge goals have been met.

“UWSP has been a proud member of the Stevens Point community for 125 years,” said Alumni Relations Director Laura Gehrman Rottier. “We hope that our friends and neighbors are able to join in the festivities surrounding this year’s Day of Giving.”
