County’s solid waste department to hold special hazardous waste collection

The Portage Co. Solid Waste Department will hold its second after-hours hazardous waste collection event on Sept. 29.

Amanda Haffele, solid waste director, said a previous collection took place in June, and residents turned in about 1,300 pounds of hazardous chemicals that may otherwise have wound up in the water table.

“Hazardous waste collection events are imperative to keeping the environment clean,” Haffele said in a news release last week. “They also keep residents safer and healthier by limiting their exposure to hazardous chemicals. Improper storage or disposal of hazardous items can cause fires, groundwater contamination, and injuries to people and animals through accidental poisonings.”

The solid waste department oversees and administers programs at the Material Recovery Facility and the Transfer Facility, located at 600 Moore Rd. in Plover.

Normal hours of operation are Monday-Friday: 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday 7:30-10:30 a.m.

For the Sept. 29 collection, hours have been extended to 5:30 p.m.

County residents need to register in advance by calling 715.346.1931. To help offset disposal costs, residents will be charged $0.75/lb. Items containing mercury will cost $3/lb., and latex paint will cost $1.50/lb.
