County parks commission to consider policy for Native American burial mounds

By Patrick Lynn

The Portage Co. Parks Commission will consider on Thursday adopting a new policy relating to the care of local Native American burial mounds.

Referencing a Madison-area policy outlining maintenance and guidelines, commissioners may vote on creating a local policy to govern how local burial mounds are cared for with “the utmost respect and responsibly managed in a manner that protects the integrity of the mounds at all times,” according to the agenda.

The commission will also consider the future of campground reservations during the ongoing pandemic.

A Memorandum of Understand is also on Thursday’s agenda. The pending agreement between the county and Rosholt resident Jan Kraetesh is related to the donation by the Tree Lake Association of a boat dock for public use on Tree Lake. If approved, the dock will be installed in May of 2021.

The full meeting agenda can be found here.

The Park Commission will meet at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, in the Jordan West Lodge of Jordan Park, 1770 County Rd. Y in Stevens Point. The public is invited to attend.
