Column: Boys & Girls Club showcases health eating habits

By Faith Parker

Through the hustle and bustle of everyday life, I have noticed that we tend to now have dinners sitting in front of the TV, or on any of our technology we may have.

Doing this, we lose the connection in our family unit.

Thanks to the food program we have through the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County, Schierl Center, we have done our part to have the opportunity for staff to eat supper with Club members and try to reincorporate the idea of family/community.

This is an awesome opportunity to give the kids a better sense of community as well as bringing in the importance of the family unit and bonding or creating new connections. We want kids that come to Club to feel like they belong and have a safe space to be themselves; the availability of staff eating with Club members only enhances that.

On the Stanford Children’s Health website, on the topic of ‘Why the family meal is important?’ states, “When a family sits down together, it helps them handle the stresses of daily life and the hassles of day-to-day existence.”
