CAP Services offers free tax preparation

CAP Services and the Internal Revenue Service are once again partnering to help residents file their personal taxes at no charge.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is available to individuals and families with annual income below 200 percent of the federal poverty level.

Income limits are adjusted for household size. For example, a single person with an income of $29,160 or less would qualify.

CAP’s volunteers complete training and certification in tax law. These IRS-certified individuals provide free basic tax preparation and help taxpayers claim eligible tax credits such as the Child Tax Credit, Wisconsin Homestead Credit, and the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

Through the EITC, eligible Wisconsin tax filers received more than $697 million in refunds in 2023, an average of approximately $2,310 per household. Unfortunately, not all eligible residents claim this credit. An estimated 23 percent of EITC eligible households do not file for the credit, leaving an estimated $136 million in unclaimed money that could help families meet their needs and support the local economy.

CAP offers tax preparation by appointment at multiple locations:

  • Stevens Point: Serving residents of Portage County, dial 211 to see if you qualify.
  • Waupaca: Serving residents of Waupaca County, dial 1-800-660-5430 to see if you qualify.
  • Wautoma: Serving residents of Waushara, Marquette, and Green Lake counties, dial 1-800-660-5430 to see if you qualify.

Electronic filing and direct deposit options allow taxpayers to conveniently submit their return and receive their refunds much more quickly than paper filing.
