The Portage County Division of Public Health on Saturday confirmed the first death in the county related to COVID-19.

County Health Officer Gary Garske said the victim, described only as “an elderly resident” died from complications due to the novel coronavirus infection.

“We are saddened by the loss of one of our community members,” Garske said by email.” I, along with our public health team and the entire community extend our sympathies to their loved ones.”

To date, over 70,000 people in Wisconsin have been diagnosed with COVID-19, and there have been at least 1,081 deaths in Wisconsin.

Garske also reminded the community to wear masks while in public and continue social distancing.

“People should also limit their travel, keep their circles small, and follow all CDC, DHS, and public health guidance. In doing so, you’re not only helping protect yourself, but also your family, friends, neighbors, and fellow community members,” he said.

Portage Co. currently has 48 active cases of the coronavirus, with 449 patients recovered.

Garske declined to release any further information.
