Police nab suspect in Plover shooting, stabbing incident

By Brandi Makuski

Sheriff Mike Lukas has confirmed the suspect in an early-morning shooting on Thursday has been arrested.

Portage Co. deputies worked with police from Stevens Point and Plover to capture Alec Varney, 18, who has been on the run since fleeing the scene at the 3800 block of Bluebird Dr. in Plover Thursday morning.

Varney was reportedly taken into custody during a high-risk traffic stop in Plover, Lukas said, thanks to “numerous citizen tips” as to Varneys’ location.

Deputies were called to a home on the 3800 block of Bluebird Dr. at 4:49 a.m. after a 911 caller reported shots fired. Varney fled the scene before officers arrived, and it’s possible he may have left the county, Sheriff Mike Lukas said.

Varney reportedly fired a shotgun at two young males during an argument at a social gathering at the residence, Lukas said. A third person in the home was stabbed. All three have been treated and are expected to make a full recovery, Lukas said.

According to court records, Varney was charged for underage drinking twice in 2017.
