Public piano reinstalled downtown

Mayor Mike Wiza has announced a public piano has been installed in downtown Stevens Point.

It’s the third consecutive year there’s been a donated piano near the bus shelter on the 1200 block of Main St. The piano was painted by volunteers from UW-Stevens Point, Wiza said.

“This is such a cool project each year. People love this opportunity for public music; I’ve seen people of all ages playing and many more people just listening,” Wiza said in an announcement this week.

The piano is protected from most of the weather, Wiza said, but as the outdoor season turns colder, the piano will fall out of tune. He said the city is looking for a volunteer to retune the piano every few weeks, but it is also seeking another donated piano for next year.

Anyone with a piano “in decent shape” that could be donated next year should contact Wiza’s office at 715-346-1570.
