Plover VFW considers land purchase

By Brandi Makuski

The Plover VFW Post may expand its property this year.

Visitors at the Post, 2970 Hickory Dr., have been limited to a 75′ by 200′ space for the past 10 years, part of which the Post has leased on the northern adjacent lot, according to Norb Strasser, post commander.

But now, the entire 2.7-acre lot north of the building is up for sale, and the VFW was given the right of first refusal.

The property is currently owned by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Strasser said the VFW just funded a $2,000 survey for the lot.

“The DOT called us and said they were going to put the lot up for sale and asked if we wanted to buy it,” Strasser said.

The certified survey map has been approved by the village on Feb. 19. For the next step, Strasser said, WisDOT will bring in an appraiser.

“Hopefully, we can get it for under $10,000,” Strasser said.

The VFW is the oldest and largest nonprofit veterans service organization in the country, stemming back to 1899. Its members include eligible veterans and military service members from the active, guard, and reserve forces. It offers many social events throughout the year, though many of its events are open to the public. The organization also collects damaged and retired American flags for proper disposal.

The VFW relies on members to continue operating. Anyone who was honorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces and served overseas is eligible for membership.
