Plover police, fire/EMS, face off in friendly Sunday game

By Brandi Makuski

It was a friendly standoff between Plover’s emergency services, but the Plover Police Department bested the village’s fire and EMS department on a sunny, mild Aug. 15.

The two departments, with help from their administrative office staff, as well as family and friends, played each other at Soik Field in the Woyak Community Sports Complex, with the first pitch thrown at noon.

It was a loosely organized event that wasn’t widely publicized, as Police Chief Dan Ault said it was “just a friendly game to blow off a little steam” after a stress-filled 17 months of COVID-related issues compounding both departments’ regular duties.

Assistant EMS Chief Tim Cisewski from the Plover Fire Department said the two departments traded barbs via email on Friday. Ciseweski said he reminded both departments to use common sense during COVID and to stay home if they felt ill.

In the same email, he told Ault that Plover medics would be sure to have plenty of extra bandages and splints on hand for the numerous injuries he anticipated from the PD’s team. Ault responded by joking he would run a check to see if all firefighters and EMTs were current on their vehicle registrations.

Plover Administrator Dan Mahoney and Village President Tom Davies umpired the game.

After about two hours and nine innings, the police department’s “blue” team beat out the fire/EMS “red” team by a score of 16-11. Afterward, the group had a cookout lunch prepared by Ray Potocki from Marine Corps League Central Wisconsin Detachment #350.
