Stevens Point firefighters join hands and join a group of boys and girls playing in the downward spray coming off Tower 2 on July 27.

SPFD Chief Jb Moody said his department made a last-minute decision on Thursday to provide a pop-up splash pad in the west parking lot at Stevens Point Area Senior High.

Moody said it was “a way to give back to the community,” as temps topped out at 96 degrees on Thursday.

All told, about 20 boys and girls of all ages showed up for the impromptu fun. SPFD provided the service for about two hours.

Moody said it’s possible the department would do this again and would attempt to provide more notice. Thursday’s event was held about 90 minutes after it was announced.
