CREATE announces film festival screenings

The Basin Short Film Festival is scheduled for Oct. 5-8 and will offer screenings of short films at locations across Portage Co.

According to a news release from CREATE, the festival is devoted to showcasing Wisconsin-focused artists and work, while promoting engagement with local creative organizations and unique screening spaces. The fest also focuses primarily on short films, 30 minutes or less, and aims to feature independent cinema that fosters critical discussion and community connection.

Select works will be screened at the following locations:

Caravan Wine, 1221 Second St., Stevens Point, a looping projections of selected performance and installation work will be shown on Thursday, Oct. 5 and Friday, Oct. 6, from 5-8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7 from 3-8 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 8 from 3-6 p.m.

“Film festivals are a great way to showcase regional talent and engage with local businesses,” said Garrett Katerzynske, a project manager with CREATE. “This fest will provide a platform for local filmmakers, support our creative economy, and help us introduce new community spaces as screening locations.”

Experimental films and animated shorts will be screened on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. at The Annex, 1136 Main St. At 8 p.m., music videos and animated shorts will be shown at the Point Brewery Patio, 2617 Water St.

On Friday, Oct. 6, short documentaries will be screened at Jensen Center, 487 N Main St. in Amherst. Films made in 48 hours or less will be screened at The Landmark Coffeehouse, also in Amherst, at 102 S. Main St.

Great Northern Distilling, 1011 Second St., in Stevens Point, will screen short documentaries and experimental shorts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7.

The festival closes out at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8, with animated shorts, films made in 48 hours or less, and music videos, screened at The Idea Center, 1039B Ellis St. in Stevens Point.

Tickets are $10 per person, $15 per couple, or $30/person and $45/couple for the entire festival and are available here.

Following each screening, filmmakers have been invited to talk about their creative process and answer questions from the audience.
