Firefighters say one person sustained minor injuries following an early morning fire at McCain Foods in Plover.

The 911 call came in at 5:27 a.m. on March 7 from 10973 Hwy. 54.Crews from Plover, Stevens Point, Hull, Bancroft, Rudolph, and Grand Rapids responded to the fire.

Plover Deputy Fire Chief Anthony Luchini said there was an active fire in the south side of the building when the first crews arrived.

“When we got there, there was a fire in the fryer area of the building, and it looked like it had gone up into the air ventilation system,” Luchini said. “We got up there and there was some fire on the exterior of that pipe, so we were able to put the fire out, and the internal fire system was able to extinguish the fire inside the pipe.”

McCain’s fire suppression system prevented the fire from spreading, Luchini said, adding that the south end of the building would be down for about a day.

Two Portage Co. ambulances were also called to the scene. One person was treated for smoke inhalation on the scene. There were no other injuries.

The Stockton Fire Department temporarily stated a crew at PFD to cover other calls in the village.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Luchini said.
