Metro Wire Staff

Police have arrested a Stevens Point man on numerous charges following a high-speed pursuit on Tuesday morning.

According to a news release from SPPD, a patrol officer attempted a traffic stop on the 1300 block of Division St. at 8:23 a.m. when they observed a motorist in a 2013 Volkswagen Passat traveling 50 miles an hour. The motorist did not stop, and the officer pursued the vehicle until they lost sight of the suspect.

Soon after, officers located the Volkswagon again and identified the motorist as 38-year-old Anthony J. Andrae. Andrae has an open felony warrant from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. The vehicle was registered to Andrae’s girlfriend, the news release said.

Stevens Point and Plover police pursued the vehicle into Plover residential neighborhoods, where he drove through construction zones, and into residential backyards, where he damaged lawns and landscaping. A PIT maneuver was attempted but was unsuccessful.

After a 7.2-mile pursuit with top speeds at 80 mph, Andrae turned into an apartment complex on Hickory Dr., to the east of Post Rd. in Plover, where he exited the vehicle and was taken into custody. No one was injured during the pursuit but one squad car sustained minor damage.

Police are requesting charges of OWI, first offense, felony fleeing an officer, hit and run/damage to property, and numerous traffic offenses.

The Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office also assisted during the pursuit.
