Jay-Mar, open through construction, boasts a wealth of locally sourced products

Despite the total rebuild of a section of Hwy. B in Plover, Jay-Mar remains open for business — and it’s boasting a wealth of locally cultivated products.

The family-owned establishment was founded in 1970 and has a team that’s worked hard to become a cornerstone of the community, according to Tony Grapsas, president of the company.

While it’s a destination for farmers, gardeners, and pet owners alike, Jay-Mar sets itself apart by sourcing many of its products from businesses located in Portage Co. and the surrounding region.

“We collaborate with distributors statewide, and some of our products are manufactured right here in Plover,” said Grapsas.

Among the local products are Dr. Dan’s Freeze-Dried Beef Liver Dog Treats from Butcher Block 66 in Stevens Point, the Front Porch Pets brand from Plainfield, other Wisconsin-based products, and Jay-Mar’s own blend of seed.

“Jay-Mar makes the bird seed, lawn seed, and fertilizers in Plover at our fertilizer plant,” Grapsas said. “Sourcing local means a lot to the Jay-Mar brand.”

The store is also well-known for its support of the Humane Society of Portage County, located across the street, collecting spare change at the counter and holding brat frys each summer to benefit the cause.

The store is also popular for its “Nearly World Famous Bird Seed Sale” each November.

Jessica Groholski, manager of the Jay-Mar retail store, said the staff is working to reorganize the store to highlight the most sought-after items.

“Our aim is to spotlight local businesses,” she said.

Jay-Mar is located at 2130 Jay-Mar Rd., just off County Hwy. B in Plover and can be reached at 715-341-3445. See the company’s website here.
