Historical society to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day

By Patrick Lynn

In honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, the Portage County Historical Society has scheduled a special open house event on Wednesday, February 7.

The event will showcase the current feature exhibit, “We Just Wanted to Play: The Story of Women’s Athletics in Portage County,” which offers a look into the pivotal moments in the history of women’s sports in the region.

The open house will take place at the Portage County Historical Society’s Heritage Park historical site, 2700 Madison Ave. in Plover, from 2 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 7.

The exhibit features a collection of artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia that highlight the journeys of local women athletes. From those who paved the way for future generations to those who competed on the global stage, the exhibit captures the resilience and dedication of Portage County’s female athletes.

The exhibit also sheds light on the obstacles women and girls faced throughout history. It serves as a tribute to the women who defied societal norms and pushed the boundaries to pursue their passion for sports.

The open house is free and open to the public.
