Convicted sex offender released in Stevens Point

Metro Wire Staff

A twice-convicted Portage Co. sex offender is scheduled to be released this weekend from prison.

William M. Varga, 40, will be living at a halfway house for recently-released sex offenders at 1504 Water St. His release is scheduled for sometime after Nov. 11, according to Stevens Point police.

Varga was convicted of first-degree sexual assault of a 13-year-old child in 2007, and again in 2009 for forcing himself on a 14-year-old. In March 2021, he was also convicted on charges of felony bail-jumping and manufacturing/delivery of amphetamines. His probation was revoked following the latter charge and he was sent to prison.

Varga is a white male, 180 pounds and five feet, eight inches tall with brown hair and hazel eyes.

Upon release from prison, placed under supervision with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC), and monitored by Sex Offender Agent Specialists with the Division of Community Corrections, in Portage County. He is also subject to lifetime GPS monitoring.

Additional conditions of his release include not having any unsupervised contact with minors; not being in taverns/bars/liquor stores, and not consuming alcohol or drugs. Varga will be required to comply with standard sex offender rules and to cooperate with electronic monitoring, including complying with all requirements and the lifetime registry of the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry.

Any changes of address for Varga are available at www.widocoffenders.org.

Stevens Point police say Varga has served his sentence and is not wanted by law enforcement at this time. Sex offenders have always lived in the area but it was not until the Sex Offender Registration and Community Notification Law was enacted that law enforcement was able to share this information with the community. Abuse of this information to threaten, intimidate or harass registered sex offenders will not be tolerated, police say.
