City’s newest park celebrated Thursday

By Patrick Lynn

The city will unveil its newest park on Thursday.

John S. Groholski Park was donated last November to the city’s park system by Judy Groholski, in memory of her late husband, on the condition it is preserved as natural land.

The 9.2-acre park, which runs along River View Ave. just north of Ben Franklin Jr. High, will remain largely natural, with a system of walking trails, boardwalks over wetland areas, and a gazebo for gatherings. The main entrance and a welcome center will be situated off of Water St.

Improvements will be made over the next five years, according to the parks department.

City leaders and members of The Groholski Family will be present at the park’s formal dedication on April 22. A ribbon-cutting is planned for 11 a.m. Parking is available in the lot of the school district’s transportation office on River View Ave., or along Whiting Ave., just off of River View.
