Central Waters named on ‘Best of’ list for stout

By Patrick Lynn

An Amherst-based brewer has one of the best stout beers in the world.

According to beeradvocate.com, an American imperial stout called Black Gold from Central Waters Brewing Co. has been rated the best stout in Wisconsin, based on nearly 900 online reviews.

The stout also has been named number 115 on the website’s top 250 best beers in the world.

Stout is often heavy-bodied, with a higher alcohol content and a more robust flavor profile than its brewed counterparts. While an average beer contains about 5 percent alcohol, Black Gold has about 11 percent, the website said.

Central Waters has more than 20 of its labels on the top 100 list of all beer styles for Wisconsin, with its Black Gold- Rye listed as #3, Toppling Waters at #5, and Brewer’s Reserve Bourbon Barrel Cassian Sunset rounding out the top 10.

O’so Brewing Company also has several entries on the top 100 list.

Central Waters, located at 351 Allen St. in Amherst, turns 25 in 2023 and is holding an anniversary party from 3-8 p.m. on Jan. 28. For more details see the brewer’s website.
