Roaring ’20s-themed centennial celebration planned for Hotel Whiting

By Patrick Lynn

The Portage County Historical Society is opening the doors of the Hotel Whiting with a Roaring ’20s-themed gala on Dec. 5.

The Whiting’s Anniversary Affair will be an evening steeped in glitz, glamour, and history, commemorating a century of history and elegance at the iconic Hotel Whiting, now called the Whiting Place, at 1400 Strongs Ave. in Stevens Point.

The night will transport guests back to the 1920s, according to John Harry, the executive director of the Portage Co. Historical Society, and it coincides with the 90th anniversary of Prohibition’s repeal and Stevens Point’s 165th anniversary. Attendees can savor “throwback” beverages from Point Brewery and Great Northern Distilling, paired with appetizers from Rockman’s Catering, and live music from Cassondra Lea.

Harry will present a historical overview of the Hotel Whiting and the Prohibition era. Guided tours led by Stevens Point native Chelsey Pfiffner will offer a closer look at the architectural gem, and a rare glimpse for the public after over 30 years.

The Whiting, once hailed as “the finest hotel north of Chicago,” opened in 1923 and served as a social hub until its closure in 1986. Remodeled in 1989 as apartments, the lower level also previously housed the Noel Group and Travel Guard Insurance.

The Affair offers the first public viewing of much of the space in over three decades.

Key event highlights include a raffle for a custom-made 1920s-inspired jewelry piece from Lee Ayers Jewelers, designed by Thomas Dailing Designs. All ticket buyers will also become Portage County Historical Society members if they aren’t already.

Tickets cost $25 for PCHS members and $30 for non-members. For ticket purchases and more information, go to pchswi.org/specialevents.
