Portage Co. teens invited to participate in new innovation series

By Patrick Lynn

The Boys & Girls Club of Portage County and CREATE Portage County are joining forces to host a new program aimed at local teens.

The 2024 Global Game Jam Next, an innovative and engaging workshop series, is open to Portage Co. teens in grades 7-12. It’s open to all aspiring artists, programmers, designers, storytellers, and musicians.

No prior knowledge or experience is required, and membership to the Boys & Girls Club or CREATE is not required to participate. Participation is free.

The series will be held on Wednesdays between Jan. 24 and Feb. 14 at BGC’s Guided Pathways for Success (GPS) Building at 931 Michigan Ave., immediately north of the Berard Center entrance. Additional information will be sent to those who register.

During the 2024 Global Game Jam, participants will form teams to design and build a physical or digital game from an initial concept to a playable demo.

The workshops are being led by Jeremy Nikolai, who has been developing games since 2005, with a dozen shipped titles — covering console, mobile, and VR — does regular game jams with industry and hobbyist teams, and has facilitated a game design workshop for kids hosted by EA Glasslab.

Registration is online at https://www.cognitoforms.com/BoysGirlsClubOfPortageCounty/CREATEYouthForceGlobalGameJam2024.
