Judith A. Lerand, 83

Judith A. Lerand, age 83, of Stevens Point, passed away on July 31, 2023, at Point Manor with her daughter, Andrea, son-in-law, Justin, and granddaughter, Atlanta, by her side.

Judith was born on October 2, 1939, to the late Edward and June (née Hall) Sevals in Prairie Farm, Wis. She moved to Barron, Wis., and to Superior, Wis. where she grew up, attended the local schools and graduated from high school.

She attended UW-Superior where she earned a bachelor’s degree in teaching. Judy taught briefly in Superior as well as in Minneapolis, Minn. and Colorado Springs, Colo. Judy settled in Stevens Point where she taught elementary school for over 40 years. She retired from McDill Elementary in 1997.

Judy married the love of her life, Leslie “Wayne” Lerand on August 4, 1962 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Superior, Wis.

Judy will be remembered for her loving, compassionate, giving nature. In her free time, she enjoyed traveling, canoeing, hiking, birdwatching, gardening, and cooking. She was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she dedicated a lot of her time volunteering in various groups throughout the church.

Judy is survived by her daughter, Andrea (Justin) Gassman; their children, Alexandria (Dustin) Plaski, Andrew Winkler, Atlanta (fiancé, Kaden Jansen) Gassman, and Jaylen Gassman and great-grandchildren, Justin, Aurora, Archer, Alden, and Gracyn.

Judy is further survived by son, Christopher Lerand; his children, David Lerand and Cinder (Ryan) Handlin and great-granddaughter, Emma Handlin. She is also survived by sister, Jane (Terry) O’Connell and brother, Edward Sevals; several nieces and nephews and some really special friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and June Sevals; husband, Wayne Lerand; and sister, Virginia Sevals.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 1, 2023 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Stevens Point. A time of visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will follow in St. Paul Lutheran Church.
