Wildfires from Canada triggers ‘unhealthy’ air quality levels in Wisconsin

By Patrick Lynn

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WisDNR) has issued another round of air quality advisories — again, due to smoke from wildfires in Canada.

The advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17 through 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 21, across all of Wisconsin.

The PM2.5 air quality index (AQI) is expected to range from the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” level to the “unhealthy for all” level.

Sensitive groups, which include people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, those who are pregnant, and those who work outdoors should consider moving all events inside.

The best way to avoid wildfire smoke is to stay indoors. Be sure to:

  • Close windows and doors.
  • Run A/C on recirculate.
  • Use an indoor air purifier.

If you must spend time outside during wildfire smoke events, state officials recommend the following:

  • Check air quality conditions before leaving the house and throughout the day.
  • Avoid or limit exercising outdoors.
  • Consider wearing an N-95 mask, especially if outdoors for an extended period.
  • Stay informed.
  • The DNR offers a variety of ways to stay up-to-date on the current air quality.

Residents can check current air quality conditions from the statewide air monitoring network by downloading the free WisconsinAQM mobile app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Visitors can sign up to receive air quality advisory notices by email or text.

The EPA utilizes corrected data from air quality sensors to fill in the spatial gaps between regulatory air monitors on their airnow.gov web map, which shows current fire and smoke.
