Ramona M. Nugent, 90

Ramona M. Nugent, of Stevens Point, passed away on February 1, 2023, at Dimensions Living Center, at the age of 90.

Ramona was born June 2, 1932 to Julian and Mary (née Pehowski) Lila in Amherst Junction. She grew up in the area, attending local schools and graduating from Amherst High School.

Shortly after high school, Ramona met George Nugent when she agreed to go on a blind date at Bowlmor Lanes in Wisconsin Rapids. The date went so well that the two eventually married. On September 17, 1951, they devoted their lives to each other at St. James Catholic Church.

They went on to have four beautiful children together; raising them in the Stevens Point area. In addition to her role as a mother, Ramona worked for various companies as a graphic designer. Ramona and George enjoyed nearly 65 years together; until George’s passing in 2016.

Ramona, the beloved “Potato Salad Queen,” was a self-renowned master chef; specializing in chicken dumpling soup and, of course, potato salad. She found great joy in cooking for large family gatherings and making sure her loved ones were fed. While her generosity extended well beyond the kitchen, she also had a feisty side to her.

Her children, specifically Pat, can attest to this with their memories of being chased around the yard with a flyswatter. While Pat believes this was her favorite activity, she did enjoy spending time in her garden, going fishing, camping at Fish Lake, and donning her goofy Packer hat while cheering them on.

In her years with George, the two were very social and enjoyed spending time with numerous close friends; going to Casinos, participating in bowling leagues, and hanging out at the VFW.

Ramona is lovingly survived by her children, Nancy (Lawrence) Sparhawk, Patrick (Sheryl) Nugent, Michael (Sandra) Nugent, and Mary Jo Sjoberg; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She is further survived by her brother, James Lila.

Ramona was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George, her siblings, Clifford and Georgeanna, a son-in-law, Orie Sjoberg, and a great-granddaughter.

The family would like to thank the staff at Dimensions Living Center (West Wing) and St. Croix Hospice for the compassionate care given to Ramona and all those who visited her.

The family will be designating a memorial at a later date, to honor Ramona’s life. They kindly request that those who wish to express sympathy, consider making a donation towards this memorial.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 11, 2023 at 11 a.m. at St. Bronislava Catholic Church, 3200 Plover Rd. Plover. Rev. Edward Shuttleworth will officiate. Friends and family are invited to gather and share memories on Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until the Rosary Prayer Service at 10:45 a.m.
