Developing: County leaders to assess security at downtown library

Metro Wire Staff

Portage Co. Sheriff Mike Lukas on Wednesday said he and others in the county plan to reassess security at the downtown library.

In a Jan. 24 news release, Lukas summarized a Tuesday night stabbing that took place at the Portage Co. Library, 1001 Main St., leaving a 71-year-old man in the hospital with multiple injuries but in stable condition.

A 29-year-old suspect, Frank C. Jackson, who is homeless, is behind bars on multiple charges related to the incident.

Lukas said he and others in county government are “taking further actions” to enhance security at the library location, but he did not elaborate on what those plans might be.

“We remain committed to the safety of the library’s patrons and staff members,” Lukas said. “We want to thank the Stevens Point Police Department for their assistance with the safe apprehension of the suspect and their continued partnership in public safety.”
