Communities offer Memorial Day programs

Several Memorial Day programs are being held in the Portage County area:

In Stevens Point, there be a Memorial Day service at the WW1 monument in Veterans Memorial Park on the south side of Stevens Point at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 27.

Also Stevens Point, there will be a Memorial Day service at Pfiffner Pioneer Park on Monday, May 27, at 11 a.m. A passing plane will drop a flower wreath into the Wisconsin River. Attendees should bring their own chairs.

The Tomorrow River Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #11346 will host Memorial Day services on Monday, May 27, 2024, at 9 a.m. in the Amherst High School gym.

The program, themed “Land of the Free Because Real Heroes Wear Dog Tags,” will honor fallen service members and feature patriotic music, poetry, and a video presentation. Gold Star Mother Joan Uhl and families of recently deceased veterans will be recognized. Blue Star flags will be presented to families of active-duty service members.

Attendees will then participate in a procession to the Mill Street Bridge and Greenwood Cemetery for additional ceremonies. A reception will follow at the High School Commons.

The Memorial Day parade will begin in Amherst on Washington Ave. at 10 a.m.

Plover VFW Post 10262 and Plover American Legion Post 543 will hold Memorial Day services on Monday, May 27, 2024, at various cemeteries and memorials:

• 8:00 AM – McDill Cemetery (Cty Trunk HH)
• 8:30 AM – Liberty Corners (Cty Trunk J)
• 8:50 AM – Maine Cemetery (South Hoover Ave)
• 9:10 AM – Korean War Memorial (Lake Pacawa in Plover)
• 9:40 AM – Restlawn Cemetery (State Hwy 54 in Wood County)
• 10:00 AM – Meehan Cemetery (State Hwy 54 and Meehan Drive)
• 10:20 AM – St. Bronislava Cemetery (State Hwy 54 in Plover)
• 10:40 AM – Plover Cemetery (River Drive in Plover)
• 11:00 AM – Village Memorial (Off Post Road at Village Hall, Plover)

The ceremonies will conclude at 11:00 AM at the Veterans Memorial Park in Plover.

Memorial Day, established in 1868 as Decoration Day, honors those who died while serving in the U.S. military. It is observed on the last Monday of May.
